It is possible to appreciate how in the distal segment of the optic nerve (ON), contiguous to the posterior portion of the eyeball, the perineural vessels surround the sheath together with the fat. Instead, in the proximal segment, the optic nerve is contiguous to the ophthalmic artery (OA), which runs parallel to the internal carotid artery (ICA)
